Ferrous metal, is metal containing certain amounts of Iron, it is usually an Alloy made up of more than one metal. You can easily tell which metals are Ferrous by the way they stick to a magnet. Most Ferrous metals are quite heavy Such as: Iron, Cast Iron, Stainless Steel, and Carbon Steel.
Non-Ferrous Metal, is metal containing no amount of iron, and without iron a magnet will not stick to it. Non-Ferrous metals such as Copper, Brass, Nickel, Zinc, Aluminum, and Lead are typically more resistant to corrosion or rust unlike Ferrous Metals.
The best method before turning in your scrap metal is to sort and clean it. Separating Ferrous from Non-Ferrous metals, separating your metal by type : Copper, Brass, Aluminum, Arni, Steel, Tin etc. And Cleaning your metal from things such as: plastic, unwanted steel, rubber, paint, tape, etc.
Insulated wires don't have to be removed from the casing, but it's best method to remove items that are not wire such as Electrical outlets or breaker boxes, etc.
